Junior Team Departs for European Championships

The Junior European Championships take place this weekend in the north German city of Krefeld (near Dusseldorf), and a strong Irish team of both male and female juniors from a number of counties will depart early on Thursday morning. These athletes have undergone months of trials and camps to progress through the selection process and earn a place on the team for the weekend. Under the coaching guidance of Ray Morrison and Dan Buckley in the sculling group, and Fran Keane and John Walsh in the sweep group, this year’s team is particularly strong and experienced.

With many of last year’s World Championships and Coupe de la Jeunesse team members and medallists featuring, last year’s experience will be of great benefit to those who are returning once again to wear their green one-pieces.

Aoife Casey, who competed in the World Championships last year in Rotterdam, will compete in the W2x with Coupe medallist Margaret Cremen. The Fermoy-based pair of Ellie O’Reilly and Gill McGirr will race their first international regatta in the W2-.

On the men’s team, experience is plentiful in both boats with Ross Corrigan and Aaron Johnston racing once again in the M2-. Ross raced in last year’s Coupe de la Jeunesse while Aaron is in his third year of representing Ireland. The men’s quad sees Cork Boat Club’s Barry O’Flynn together with Matt Dundon from Clonmel, James Quinlan from Castleconnell and Jack Keating from Carlow Rowing Club compete together.

Racing will start on Saturday morning at 8:30am with the Women’s 2-. Competition is high with many of last year’s World Champions competing in other boat classes.

We wish our young team the very best of luck and updates will be on all our social media platforms over the course of the weekend.
