Meet our Rio 2016 Olympians

Rowing Ireland are immensely proud be represented by 5 athletes at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

There will be three Irish boats competing at the Games; a lightweight women’s double scull, lightweight men’s double scull and heavyweight women’s single scull.

The 2016 Olympic Games are fast approaching…not long to go ’til the opening ceremony on Friday 5th August, and the Olympic Regatta kicks off the following day. Read a little about the Rowing Ireland athletes below:

Sinead Lynch
Club – St. Michael’s Rowing Club
Event – Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls

  • From Donegal, now living in Cork
  • Qualified pharmacist and doctor
  • Married to Sam Lynch (double world champion) and mother of 3 young girls
  • Started rowing at age 23
  • Successful international career as a junior in triathlon
  • Member of St. Michael’s Rowing Club
  • 1 Gold, 5 Silver, 3 Bronze World Cup Medals
  • World Champion 2001 in the Lightweight Women’s Single Sculls, Ireland’s first ever female world champion
  • 1 Silver medal and 1 Bronze medal at World Championships
  • Changed to track cycling in 2009 narrowly missing qualification for London 2012 Olympics
  • Paired with Claire Lambe in June 2015 in LW2x
  • Qualified for Rio Olympic at 2015 World Championships

 

Claire Lambe
Club – Old Collegians Boat Club
Event – Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls

  • From Dublin, living in Cork
  • UCD graduate in Engineering
  • Started rowing at 15
  • Rowed for Commercial Rowing Club before moving to UCD Boat Club when she started college
  • Now a member of Old Collegians Boat Club
  • First international experience was the Home International Regatta at 16
  • Silver medal at the World University Championship 2012
  • Fourth place at the U23 World Championship 2012 and fourth place at European Championship 2013 in the lightweight single scull.
  • National Champion of Ireland in the Women’s single scull 2013 and 2014
  • Finished in 9th place at the 2015 World Championship, qualifying for the Rio Olympics in the Lightweight Women’s Double Scull with Sinead Lynch
  • World Cup II 2016, 7th in Lightweight Double Scull
  • World Cup III 2016, 4th in Lightweight Double Scull
  • European Championships 2016, 9th in Lightweight Double Scull

 

Gary O’ Donovan
Club – Skibbereen Rowing Club
Event – Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls

  • From Skibbereen Co. Cork
  • Recently completed final year of Marketing (BBus honours degree) at CIT
  • Rowed on different Irish teams since 2008 from junior levels to under 23
  • Last year he began competing in a lightweight double with his younger brother Paul
  • Together they finished fifth at the European Rowing Championships in May 2015
  • September 2015 finished in the top 11 in the World Rowing Championships securing a qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio
  • Silver medal in 2016 World Cup in lightweight men’s double sculls
  • European Champions 2016 in lightweight men’s double sculls

 

Paul O’ Donovan
Club – UCD Boat Club
Event – Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls

  • From Skibbereen Co. Cork
  • Physiotherapy student at UCD
  • Rows in the LM2x with his brother Gary
  • Started rowing on the Irish junior team in 2008 at the Home International Regatta in the junior quad scull and has been on the Irish team every year since
  • He has made finals at Junior, Under 23 and Senior World Championships in the single scull
  • Won a bronze medal at the World U23 Championships in 2013 in the lightweight single scull
  • Moved to the double scull with his brother Gary last year
  • Qualified for the Rio Olympics in September 2015 when they finished 11th at the World Championships
  • Silver medal in 2016 World Cup in lightweight men’s double sculls
  • European Champions 2016 in lightweight men’s double sculls

 

Sanita Puspure
Club – Old Collegians BC
Event – Women’s Single Scull

  • Originally from Latvia, moved to Ireland in 2006
  • Living in Cork with her husband Kaspar and two young children
  • Member of Old Collegians Boat Club
  • Competed for Latvia at Junior level
  • Began competing for Ireland in World Cup events during 2010
  • Competed in the single scull event for the first time at a World Cup event in 2012, finishing fifth
  • Ireland’s only rowing competitor at London Olympic Games and the first female single sculler since 1980
  • World Cup Events (Single Sculls): 5th place 2012, 6th place 2012, 6th place 2014, 7th place 2014, 8th place 2015, Bronze medal 2016
  • European Championships: 3rd place 2014, 5th place 2015, Bronze Medal 2016
  • World Championships: 4th place 2014, 11th place 2015
  • Olympic Games: 13th place London 2012
