Offshore Championships return to Kerry
The 2020 Irish Offshore Rowing Championships were originally due to be held at Portnoo Beach hosted by Loughros Point Rowing Club. As a result of Covid-19, Loughros Point had to withdraw as hosts but gave us ample time to find an alternative host. All clubs were given the opportunity to apply to host the event with applications closing last night.
Only one club applied to host the Championships and the Offshore Committee are delighted to announce that the Championship will once again be hosted in Kerry by Portmagee Rowing Club.
The venue for the event on 26th September will be Portmagee which is different to the O’Carroll’s Cove course used in 2018. With 10 Kerry Clubs now with offshore boats, there are bound to be a lot of local challengers to take on the clubs travelling from all corners of the country. Unfortunately, we will not have our friends from overseas participating this year due to travel restrictions.
Chair of the Organising Committee David Hussey stated “We are delighted to have been awarded the honour of hosting the championships again. We wish to welcome all competitors and spectators to the village of Portmagee.
We will be working closely with the existing championship committee to ensure that all relevant protocols and government guidelines are followed to deliver a safe event for all. This announcement along with the return of crew boats has given our sport a much-needed boost in these uncertain times. We are looking forward to welcoming all of you to South Kerry again in September”
Kieran Kerr, Chair of the Rowing Ireland Offshore Division stated “We are indebted to David and his team at Portmagee for stepping in at short notice to host the 2020 Offshore Rowing Championships.
There is a pent up demand from crews for competition and the number of crews back on the water yesterday indicates that we can look forward to an excellent event in Portmagee in September”. A number of clubs are going to offer events in the run-up to the Championships and we will announce details of these events shortly.
