Coach Wanted – Belfast Boat Club


POST TITLE: Coach for Junior Rowing 

RESPONSIBLE TO: Rowing Convenor of Belfast Boat Club

BASED AT: Belfast Boat Club, Lockview Road, Belfast, BT9 5FH

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To create and deliver a comprehensive coaching programme for a squad of junior rowers aged between 13 and 18 years of age. You will also be required to assist with coach development throughout the club. The successful candidate must be prepared to work evenings and weekends as that is when most junior sessions take place.

DURATION: Initially November 2014 – March 2015 (may be extended if additional funding becomes available). 5hrs of coaching per week (2 sessions) + 1 hr per week for administration/writing of training programmes. (Funding is available for a total of 120hrs).

You will be classed as self-employed and will be required to invoice the club on a monthly basis. Hourly rate payable: £20


v  To write and deliver a comprehensive coaching programme for a squad of committed junior rowers and to monitor its effectiveness

v  To prepare juniors for competition.

v  Teach agreed sound rowing technique – for both sweep oar rowing and sculling

v  Compile training programmes for squad (both water and land training)

v  Track and monitor progress of junior rowers

v  Work closely with and communicate effectively with other club coaches, parents and administrators

v  Manage a coaching team

v  Provide progress reports when required

v  To travel with and supervise squad during competitions

v  To develop coaches throughout the club


v  To manage boat rigging

v  To work alongside rowing secretary on the management of race entries

v  Accompany squads to races

v  To organise a weekend rowing camp/training weekend

v  To ensure the safeguarding and welfare of the young people at all times

v  To ensure all administrative duties are completed to a high standard




v  RI Level 2 coach or equivalent (may consider Level 1 + 1 year’s coaching at a suitable level)

v  Attended recent Child Protection/Safeguarding Awareness training

v  Willing to complete Fist Aid training (6hr training including AED and Hypothermia)

v  Sound knowledge of rowing and recent developments in technique and training

v  Flexible coaching hours (most work will be on a Sunday)

v  Clean driving licence

v  Trailer towing experience

v  Basic boat maintenance skills
