Ireland sent five crews to compete in the European Championships in Lucerne over the weekend.
Sanita Puspure secured a Gold Medal in the A Final of the W1x on Sunday afternoon. Puspure held off the competition from Gmelin (SUI) and Knapkova (CZE) to secure Gold. Fintan & Jake McCarthy pipped the Danish team to fifth place with a final push to the finish line and are now ranked 5th in the European Rankings in the LM2x category, the highly coveted only Olympic category for lightweights.
Earlier in the day, Ronan Byrne and Philip Doyle represented Ireland in the M2x B Final. The Men’s Double finished behind the Italian team with just .17 of a second, separating the two boats. The Lightweight Women’s Double of Denise Walsh and Lydia Heaphy took 6th in the LW2x B final. This was their first senior international race as a double and gave a great effort in a final filled with strong crews.
Gary O’Donovan finished 4th in the LM1x C Final. O’Donovan nearly took third but the Swedish boat just finished ahead of O’Donovan at the finish line.
Rowing Ireland’s High- Performance Director, Antonio Maurogiovanni said “We had a very tough windy winter which was not ideal for all our Rowing Ireland crews based at the National Rowing Centre in Cork.
The majority of our athletes has shown a significant physiological improvement that will need to be followed by a technical one to make the boats faster.
I will spend the next few days with the Rowing Ireland coaches to evaluate the results and prepare the next phase.
I have no doubt that all our crews have a significant margin of improvement as well as all the rest of the European crews racing this weekend. The challenge is up to our abilities to improve as much as we can physiologically, technically and psychologically
This event has given to me significant indications in order to evaluate the whole situation and put together the most appropriate strategies to help our athletes to perform at their best.
Thanks to all the athletes, coaches and staff for their huge contributions.”
