Job vacancy – Women in Sport Officer (coaching and leadership)

Rowing Ireland is looking for an energetic person to lead Women in Coaching.

BACKGROUND

 The future of Irish rowing is incredibly bright given the growth of the sport driven by significant success on the international stage in the last decade leading to unprecedented visibility for Irish rowing at home and abroad.

We expect that rowing will only grow following the recent qualification of our crews for the Tokyo Olympics at the World Championships in Linz, Austria.  Our success at international level will bring rowing to a level previously unseen and we are in a unique position to grow our grassroots base to support future participants of the sport.  

Rowing Ireland is also leading the way as one of the few National Governing Bodies with a female CEO and Board of Directors is gender equal.

Rowing Ireland – Women in Sport Officer 

This post is funded by Sport Ireland Women in Sport programme.

WOMEN IN SPORT 

Women in Sport is central to the work of Sport Ireland. Since 2005 the Sport Ireland Women in Sport Programme has funded a wide range of initiatives delivered by NGBs and LSPs to further the agenda of gender equality in sport. Sport Ireland has now renewed its commitment to women in sport through the development of a Women in Sport Policy. This Policy will serve as a guide for Sport Ireland’s future work and investment in the area. 

Sport Ireland has identified four target areas for immediate attention:

  • Coaching & Officiating
    • Broaden the coaching base to include more women from grassroots to high performance. 
    • Increase the number of women officiating.
  • Active Participation
    • Significantly reduce the active sport participation gradient between men and women.
    • Reduce the drop-out from physical activity and sport in young girls.
    • Engage with women of a minority background.
  • Leadership & Governance
    • Progress towards greater gender balance in Board membership of funded bodies.
    • Provide a pathway for women aspiring to become leaders of funded bodies.
  • Visibility
    • Increase the visibility and profile of our female role models in sport.
    • Use the heroes of today to inspire the next generation of future Olympians and Paralympians.

ROLE AND PURPOSE OF THE POSITION 

Rowing Ireland is committed to increasing women’s sustained involvement in the sport as coaches, volunteers, club members, officials, leaders, and participants, from grassroots to elite performance. The purpose of the role is to project management and ensure the implementation of current and future programmes while developing strong relationships and providing expertise and support to the grassroots clubs in the area of women’s and girls’ rowing.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Third level qualification in Sport Management/Coaching/Development or at least a years’ work experience in this area.
  • An understanding of rowing.
  • A background in coordinating and managing projects.
  • Administration experience. 
  • A demonstrable record of achieving results through others.
  • The ability to work flexible hours, as dictated by a sport which is largely leisure/volunteer-based would be an advantage
  • Possess excellent organisational and leadership skills
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team
  • Proven ability to think and plan strategically
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Full clean driving licence with own transport
  • Self-starter and able to work on own initiative

DESIRABLE

  • Digital native with a good understanding of all social media platforms.
  • Level 1 sports coaching qualification or equivalent or higher

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working closely with the Coach Education Development Officer and the Development and Women in Sport Manager to plan and implement a structured programme to encourage more females to get involved in coaching and officiating in rowing.
  • Coach Education Programme: Project manage the implementation of focussed women’s coach education programme. Assist the Coach Education Development Officer in the development and administration of the programme. 
  • Officiating Programme: Project manage the implementation of focussed women’s official’s education programme, working closely with the Umpires committee responsible for officiating in rowing.
  • Leading our sport – support the Rowing Ireland team and Clubs in becoming an innovative National Governing body using efficient and effective internal structures and systems
  • Sustainable development club support: Provide support for the Sustainable Development Clubs programme with focus on encouraging more female involvement in administration, coaching and officiating within the Club.  
  • Governance and Leadership Programme: Working closely with the Development and Women in Sport Manager and the CEO to assist in the development and implementation of a women’s leadership programme which will support and build the knowledge, confidence and connections amongst women to become board directors, committee members, administrators and coaches to be involved in rowing across the island of Ireland.
  • Plan and implement development initiatives aimed at increasing levels of sustainable involvement of women in coaching and officiating and supporting them once they get involved.
  • Support delivery of the TrY Coaching element of the Get Going Get Rowing programme for youth leadership.
  • Visibility, media and communications: Establish and maintain a network for women involved in coaching and officiating in rowing and work closely with the Development and Women in Sport Manager and the CEO to grow the coverage and profile of women’s and girls’ rowing.  
  • Reporting requirements: Support the Development and Women in Sport manager in the collation of reporting requirements as requested by Sport Ireland, CEO of Rowing Ireland and any other interested stakeholders.  Manage and maintain relevant data and information that relates to these requirements.

REMUNERATION 

Remuneration will be dependent on experience and skill relevant to this job description.

  • The post is a full-time fixed contract position 
  • The post will be on a contract basis to the 31st of December 2020 with a review after nine months.
  • The post will require national travel
