On Friday, August 30, 2024, Katie O’Brien and Tiarnán O’Donnell are set to compete in the PR2 Mixed Double Sculls heat at 9:50 IST at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium during the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. We are confident that Katie and Tiarnán’s dedication and hard work will bring them the success they deserve at the 2024 Paralympic Games. Their commitment to their sport, rigorous training, and the support from their coaches, families, and the entire High-Performance Team have prepared them well for this moment.
Tiarnán O’Donnell is an accomplished Irish athlete who has represented Ireland in both wheelchair basketball and Para rowing. He won a bronze medal with the Irish wheelchair basketball team at the 2023 European Championships Division C in Sarajevo before transitioning to rowing in 2023. Inspired by encouragement from Katie O’Brien, Tiarnán began his rowing career right after completing his Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Limerick. He now trains at the National Rowing Centre in Cork and competes for Lee Rowing Club. Tiarnán feels deeply honored to compete at the Paralympic Games, stating, “To get the opportunity to represent your nation on any stage is so sweet, but to do it on the biggest is something I never thought would happen.”
Katie O’Brien, a member of Galway Rowing Club, is a decorated Irish Para rower who began her rowing journey in 2012. She has achieved remarkable success, including a gold medal in the Women’s PR2 Single Sculls at the 2022 World Championships. Katie’s passion for rowing was sparked by watching the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, and she has since devoted herself to the sport, training rigorously twice a day at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. She temporarily paused her career as a veterinarian to focus entirely on her rowing ambitions, and her efforts have secured a quota spot for Ireland in the 2024 Paralympic Games. This marks her first appearance at the Paralympics.
Thank you to all our sponsors who have supported these incredible athletes on their journey to the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. Your support has been invaluable in helping them reach this peak of their sporting careers.
