A fifth place finish for both Irish crews rounded things off for team Ireland at the inaugural European Rowing U23 Championships today in Kruszwicka, Poland. Andrew Goff was first to race this morning in the A/B semi-final of the lightweight men’s single sculls, where he produced a performance worthy of second place and a spot in the A Final. Here, the UCD rower fought hard to remain within medal contention, but finished in fifth overall behind Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia and Turkey, and ahead of Sweden’s Filip Nilsson in sixth.
Later in the afternoon the Irish women’s coxed eight, who made history being the first women’s eight to represent Ireland at a European/World event, also finished fifth in the A Final. The Irish crew were only required to compete in an “exhibition race” prior to the final (a race for lanes in the final) on Saturday, and ended their campaign with a great race and fifth place finish ahead of the German crew. Russia, Romania, Great Britain and Belarus took first to fourth respectively.
