National Schools Regatta UK

NonCh 8+ Silver medalists

Ten crews from Enniskillen Royal Boat Club headed off to Eton Dorney at the end of May to compete in National Schools Regatta. They competed against the top rowing schools in the UK and after a fantastic weekend of racing they came home with the Headington Cup and three sets of silver medals.

The boys 1st eights of Nathan Timoney, Jack Kennedy, Jack McDade, Odhran Donaghy, Peter Murphy, Robbie Mills, Matthew McBrien, Sam Balxombe and cox Rory Farragher took 2nd place in the Non-Championship 8+ category.

Nathan Timoney and Odhran Donaghy won silver medals in the Championship pairs, while Zoe McCutcheon and Maeve Donnelly won the J16 coxless pairs. On Saturday Enniskillen’s J16 Girls coxed four of Victoria Wilson, Maeve Donnelly, Abby Corry, Zoe McCutcheon and cox Georgia Maxwell also took 2nd place.

Workmen’s RC, Bann RC and Fermoy RC also shone at the event, with Fermoy’s Gill McGirr and Eliza O’Reilly (double gold medalists at the 2017 Coupe de la Jeunesse) winning gold in the Championship Pair. St. Michael’s RC also sent a large contingent to Dorney Lake, and an extensive account of their crews’ results featured in the Limerick Leader.

The National Schools’ Regatta offers six lane racing to junior competitors from 14 to 18 years of age, and the competition is also open to clubs.  The event was established in 1947 to offer valuable racing experience to a wide range of junior crews, and today over 5,000 competitors race over three days (Friday-Sunday) every May. This year’s event included the use of new timing technology for live streaming of results as well as YouTube coverage of races across the weekend.
