Rowing Ireland is delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Heaney as the National Para Rowing Coach.
Peter, a native of Galway, started rowing while at school in St. Joseph’s, and later got involved in coaching with several Galway clubs. Peter has over 25 years of coaching experience and has coached at many different levels. He has worked with elite senior athletes at NUIG BC, and schoolboys at St. Joseph’s RC, where he is still currently involved.
In his 25 years as a coach, Peter has been hugely successful. His crews have won events at Ghent International Schoolboys’ Regatta, the British National Schools’ Regatta in Nottingham and the Irish National Championships. His most notable success has been St. Joseph’s three consecutive wins in the eights at the Irish Schools’ Championships from 2011-2013.
Internationally, Peter coached several winning Irish crews at the Home Internationals Regatta in Cork in 2003. Many athletes coached by Peter at St. Joseph’s RC, NUIG BC and Galway RC have gone on to represent Ireland at international level. From St. Joseph’s in particular, he has coached a large numbers of rowers who were selected to represent Ireland at Junior and U23 level, and were offered scholarships to colleges in Ireland and overseas.
Peter enjoys seeing his athletes successfully progress up the rowing ladder, in addition to developing as well-rounded individuals in other areas of their lives.
Peter is looking forward to working with Joe Cunningham, Morten Espersen and the Para Athletes; and continuing to build on with the success of the sport in the last few years.
Peter will be attending the Indoor Rowing Championships in Limerick this weekend. Any Para rowers who are currently involved (or not currently involved and would like to be) should talk to Peter or Joe Cunningham on the day, or contact them by phone or email.
