Dublin Metropolitan Regatta will be held this Saturday, 25th May on Blessington Lakes in Co. Wicklow. This year is of special significance for the regatta, with its 150-year anniversary being celebrated.
A proud tradition of fiercely contested races on the lakes is expected to be continue this year. Crews will travel from across the country to compete at the second Grand League event of 2019. Strong entries at all levels ensure notable performances can be expected. Over a hundred races will held between 8:30 and 18:10. Men’s division one eight will see another showdown between Commercial and UCD in the senior category. Bann and Coláiste Iognáid will battle it out for the women’s junior eight, with Shandon and UCD in the senior category. Five local Blessington junior men of Three Castles will be joined Carroll from Athlone for their heat in the competitive division one men’s scull. This year there will be prize awarded to both the fastest boys J18 A and J18 B sculler respectively.
The winning UCD senior eight from 1969 will have a celebratory row to mark fifty years since they won the National Championships which took place at Dublin Metropolitan Regatta. Information regarding the 150-year anniversary dinner, to be held in The Ashling Hotel on 28th June will be available.
This year’s anniversary encourages competitors, and all involved, to reflect on the rich tradition of 150 years of racing that stands before them. Spectators can look forward to a day of fearless racing where the benefit of gruelling winter miles done across the country continue to be showcased during the Irish regatta season.
