The Olympic Federation of Ireland (OFI) has today announced the recipients of the Los Angeles 2028 IOC Olympic Scholarships, with a total fund of $320,000 to be distributed among eight athletes and two teams.

The scholarships, funded through the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity Programme and supported by Team Ireland’s commercial programme, are designed to assist athletes targeting qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Each recipient will receive up to €26,500 over the four-year cycle, paid in three annual instalments, to help cover training and competition expenses.

Among the recipients is Ronan Byrne — a Tokyo 2020 Olympian and World Championship silver medallist. Ronan is rebuilding towards LA 2028 under Rowing Ireland’s high-performance programme, and this scholarship will provide vital support as he continues his preparation for a return to Olympic competition.

Niall O’Carroll, Rowing Ireland’s Head of High Performance, commented:

This scholarship is a significant boost for Ronan as he continues his journey towards Los Angeles 2028. Ronan represents everything that’s great about Irish rowing — determination, humility, and an unwavering drive to succeed.

Rowing Ireland extends its congratulations to Ronan and all scholarship recipients, and we thank the Olympic Federation of Ireland and the IOC for their continued support of Irish athletes on their Olympic pathways.
