One of Ireland’s most decorated rowers has refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He has battled this for the past 3 years and is currently undergoing his fourth regime of chemotherapy. His only chance of being cured is if a suitable Bone Marrow / Stem Cell donor can be found. This is not an easy task and his medical team is currently looking to find a match on the Global Registry, the pool from which all donations are drawn. Things are very serious as the chemotherapy treatment he is currently receiving will not cure him, it will just buy him time.
Friends are pulling together to spread awareness with a view to increasing the number of donors in Ireland on the Global Registry. We are reaching out to family, friends and friends of friends. We are hoping that people will sign up to become bone marrow donors, to give people in this situation a chance. However, this is a gift that will keep on giving and which some day you or a loved one may need and benefit from.
We are trying to get people to register in the first instance and then get tested before potentially going on to donate. Please click on the link below which has all the information you need and will answer most of your questions: http://www.giveblood.ie/Become_a_Donor/Bone_Marrow_Registry/. To register, simply fill in the on-line form and wait to be called by the Irish Blood Transfusion Service.
If you are really keen to help immediately, why not drop into one of the many blood donor clinics which take place all around the country. Check the calendar for the next clinic in your area: http://www.giveblood.ie/?gclid=CLTR2IyNncICFWNM2wodfUoAhQ
A lot of supporters and well-wishers are planning to attend the clinics being organised in The Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone on Tuesday 2nd, Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th December: http://www.giveblood.ie/Where_to_Give_Blood/?county=Westmeath
If you do go ahead and register, attend a clinic for testing, to donate blood, or to become a bone marrow donor, mention this connection, i.e. to a fellow rower with refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in need of a suitable Bone Marrow / Stem Cell donor.
Not everybody will be eligible or willing to donate bone marrow, but do think about becoming a regular blood donor.
Please spread the word in your communities. Every name on the register could potentially help somebody who needs that most special of all gifts.
