Strength Training Course for Rowing Coaches

Rowing Ireland are delighted to launch a strength training course for rowing coaches. This programme will be the start of a series of courses to be developed over the next few years to increase the level of expertise among rowing coaches working with athletes in the gym and weights room. The course will form part of L1-2-3 certification from now on. The course will be divided into two days.


Day 1 will be a general introduction to strength training. This is aimed at existing and active Level 1 & 2 coaches as well as Level 3 candidates. Day 1 will include assessments and tasks during the day.


Day 2 will be strictly for Level 3 candidates and will also include assessments and tasks.

Course Outline:


Day 1 (for L1/L2 and L3 candidates)

– The strength, power, endurance demands of rowing

– Principles of training review.

– Functional screening using the overhead squat.

– Basic testing protocols.

– Programme planning overview for Strength, Power and Endurance training.

– Using screening information to prepare programme for beginner, intermediate, advanced rowers.

– Design of anatomical adaptation circuits.

o No. of Reps, sets, Coaching Points, Eg 10 stations x 3 levels, teaching points for correct technique.

o Exercises for different goals, key exercises, and supplemental exercises.


Day 2 (for L3 candidates only)

– Functional screen (FS), breakouts, and analysis.

– Rowing specific analysis focused on FS information from Overhead Squat, Hamstring, Calf, Lats, Hips.

– Corrective actions, build into warm ups, develop routines

– Coaching points for coaching squats, lunges, deadlifts, cleans.

– Monitoring of Loading, injury prevention, fatigue, RPE, POMS, Peaking
