Saturday morning started as another overcast day in Strathclyde park on the outskirts of Glasgow. Shane O’Driscoll and Mark O’Donovan took to the water first for their 9:36 race. It is some feat that this crew accomplished moving from lightweight Gold medal winners last year to Open weight this year. The equivalent of going from fly weight in boxing to heavyweight. With a tough field to contend with in this coveted 16 boat field. The boys were sixth off the start and keep with the pace until the 1000m when they pushed into fifth place just missing out on forth to the Dutch pair and behind the British, Germans and Russians who took the other top three placings. With a finish of 11th overall they have come a long way in their quest in this Olympic boat over the last year/
The lightweight men’s double took to the water next for their… race. This the only lightweight event remaining in the Olympics’ presently. O’Donovan and O’Donovan pushed through the field at the 1500m and into first place they kept this lead to finish in first and through to the finals. They will face the Norwegians, Italians and Ukrainians together with the Belgian and Polish pair from their own heats tomorrow at 11:30.
The lightweight double of Denise Walsh and Aoife Casey will also race in the B final tomorrow.
