On the final day of racing in Chungju, Monika Dukarska and Leonora Kennedy were in action in the B Final of the Women’s Double Scull, where they faced crews from Korea, Ukraine, USA, Russia and Italy for final places 7-12 overall. The USA crew dominated this final from start to finish, with the Russian and Ukranaian crews close behind them. The Irish double were in fourth place from the, and they maintained this placing throughout the race, despite strong pushes from the Italian crew, who drew level with them at the 1500m mark. The Irish crew put in a strong final 500 metres, to finish three seconds ahead of the Italians. They finished in a time of 7:06.8, to take fourth place in this B Final.
It is early days but I am proud of their performance in their first senior World Championships

Claire Lambe was the first of the two Irish crews on the water today, for her final race of the season, in the C Final of the Women’s Lightweight Single Scull. In overcast conditions, with a slight headwind on the Tangeum International Rowing Regatta course, the UCD athlete raced at 10:54am (Local time) for final places 13-18 overall. Lambe faced scullers from Indonesia, Korea, Italy, Japan and Singapore in this final. Lambe took an early lead in this race, with a strong first 500m, giving her a two second advantage over the Singapore sculler in second place. She continued to lead the field through to the 1500m mark, where in the final sprint for the line, she was overtaken by the Italian sculler, who had been overlapping her throughout the race, and she finished second in a time of 8:07:38

The Women’s Double Scull of Monika Dukarska and Leonora Kennedy raced in the A/B Semifinals at 1:57pm, against crews from Ukraine, Germany, Great Britain, Denmark and Italy, with the top three from this Semifinal progressing to the A Final, the remainder going into the B Final. In this field of experienced crews, it was the doubles from Great Britain, Germany and Denmark who moved away from the rest of the field in the early stages of the race to take the three A Final places. The Irish double found themselves in a tight race for fifth place with the Italian crew throughout this race. Despite the strong challenge from the Italian crew, Dukarska and Kennedy held their own, moving from a 0.1 second advantage at the 1000m mark to over five seconds at the finish, in a time of 7:34.47.
They will be racing in the B Final of this event on Sunday for final places 7-12th overall.

In warm and cloudy conditions with a slight tail wind, Claire Lambe took to the water for the C/D Semifinals of the Women’s Lightweight Single Scull at the Tangeum International Rowing Regatta Course. Lambe had just missed out on an A/B Semifinal place by 0.9 seconds on Tuesday, and today the UCD athlete lined up against scullers from Kenya, Korea and Singapore in the first of two C/D Semifinals, with the top three scullers from each Semifinal progressing to the C Final. Lambe shot out of the blocks to establish an early lead on the rest of the field, and continued to extend this lead over the rest of the race, finishing over three seconds ahead of the Korean sculler in second place. Her time of 7:55.6 was the fastest time of both C/D Semifinals, and she will contest the C Final tomorrow at 10:54am (Local time) / 2:54am (Irish time) for places 13-18 overall.
The Women’s Double Scull of Monika Dukarska and Leonora Kennedy will also be competing tomorrow; in the A/B Semifinals of their event at 13:57 (Local time) / 5:57am (Irish time).

The fourth day of racing at the 2013 World Championships saw Monika Dukarska and Leonora Kennedy competing in the Repechage round of the Women’s Double Scull, for a place in the A/B Semifinals. Lining up against crews from Russia, Korea, Taipei and Namibia, the double needed a top three finish to progress to the A/B Semifinals. From the start, it was the Russian double who established a lead on the rest of the field, with the Irish double close behind them in second place. By the 1000m mark, the Irish crew had established a lead of four seconds over the Korean double in third place, and continued to challenge the Russian double for first place. The Russian crew managed to hold them off to take the win in this race, with the Irish crew just 2.2 seconds behind them at the finish, in a time of 7:12.08.
They will be racing in the A/B Semifinals of this event on Friday.
Tomorrow sees Claire Lambe competing in the C/D Semifinals of the Women’s Lightweight Single Scull at 11:46am (Local time) / 3:46am (Irish time) against scullers from Kenya, Singapore and Korea, with the top three progressing to the C Final, the remainder to the D Final.

The second day of racing saw Leonora Kennedy (Portora BC) and Monika Dukarska (Killorglin RC) take to the water in Heat 1 of the Women’s Double Scull, in a five boat race, with three places in Friday’s A/B Semifinals on the line. They faced strong competition in crews from Ukraine, Denmark, Lithuania and Russia in this heat. From the early stages of this race, the Lithuanian, Ukranian and Danish crews established a strong lead on the rest of the field. The Irish crew found themselves in fifth place throughout the first half of the race, however a strong second half from Kennedy and Dukarska saw them overtake the Russian crew, and close the gap on the rest of the field, to take fourth place in a time of 7:03.9, 1.5 seconds behind the Ukrainian crew in third place. They will race again in the Repechage on Wednesday for a place in the A/B Semifinals. Claire Lambe (UCD BC) will be racing in Repechage 1 of the Women’s Lightweight Single Scull at 10:07am (Local time) /2:07am (Irish time) tomorrow against scullers from India, Australia, Canada, Italy and Korea. The top two scullers from this Repechage will progress to the A/B Semifinals on Thursday, the remainder will compete in the C/D Semifinals. 2

The first day of racing at the Tangeum Lake International Rowing Course saw cloudy conditions on the course with a slight breeze. Lightweight single sculler Claire Lambe of UCD BC was the only Irish competitor today, racing in the heat stages of the Women’s Lightweight Single Scull at 10:49am (Local time). A fast start from Lambe saw her leading the field at the 500m mark, but the experienced Ursula Grobler of South Africa, bronze medallist at the World Cup III in July this year, was able to overtake her in the middle of the race, and went on to win this heat. Alena Kvyvasheyenka of Belarus, silver medallist at the U23 Champonships earlier this year, put in a strong second half to take second place, and the last direct place in the A/B Semifinals . Lambe finished in third place, in a time of 8:16.06, 18 seconds ahead of the Singapore sculler in fourth place, and will race again in the Repechage on Tuesday, for a place in the A/B Semifinals. Monika Dukarska (Killorglin RC) and Leonora Kennedy (Portora BC) will be competing in Heat 1 of the Women’s Double Scull at 11:17am (Local time) / 3:17am (Irish time) tomorrow. They will face crews from Ukraine, Denmark, Lithuania and Russia, with the three fastest crews progressing to the A/B Semifinals on Friday, the remainder will face a Repechage round on Wednesday. The newly formed double had an impressive start to their season at the World Cup II in Eton Dorney, where they made the A Final, and finished sixth overall, having only come together three weeks beforehand. This will be the first Senior World Championships for both athletes. ***** 24th August 2013 Claire Lambe (UCD BC) will be racing tomorrow at 10:49am (Local time) /2:49am (Irish time) in Heat 3 of the Women’s Lightweight Single Scull, against Singapore, Indonesia, Belarus and South Africa. The top two from this round will go straight to the A/B Semifinals on Thursday, while the remainder will face a Repechage round on Tuesday. This will be Lambe’s second Senior World Championships in this event: she finished 11th in the 2012 Championships in Austria. This season she has competed in the European Championships in May, where she finished fourth, and the World Cup II in June, where she finished fifth.
