World Rowing Championships 2018
Sunday 9th September
Racing began for five Irish crews today, on Day One of the 2018 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. UCC’s Aifric Keogh and Emily Hegarty were first of the Irish to line out in Heat One of the women’s pair, where a strong second place finish ensured they progressed directly to the A/B semi-finals and Rowing Ireland were off to a good start. Skibbereen’s Shane O’ Driscoll and Mark O’ Donovan followed in the men’s equivalent, but the competition was tough in the heavyweight men’s pairs and the Irish had to make do with fifth place, meaning the repechage awaits as only the first four boats in the heat were to qualify direct.
Shortly afterwards Ireland’s second heavyweight men’s crew, consisting of Queen’s University Belfast’s Philip Doyle and Under 23 rower Ronan Byrne of UCC, contested the first heat of the men’s double sculls. The newly-formed crew produced an impressive performance to earn them a second-place finish in what is their first international event as a crew, having both competed as single scullers so far this season. However, just the winners of the heat were put through to the semi-finals, so the Irish double will also face the repechages in a couple of day’s time.
After a break, the afternoon’s racing commenced in Plovdiv where Rowing Ireland’s lightweight doubles were both in action. Denise Walsh and Aoife Casey of Skibbereen required a top two finish in their heat, but New Zealand and Australia were the ones to progress, with Ireland finishing in fourth place behind Canada in third. A repechage will serve as a second chance for them to book their spot in the A/B semi-finals. In the lightweight men’s double sculls, Gary and Paul O’ Donovan had an impressive win ahead of crews from Greece, Portugal, Argentina and Germany, producing the second quickest time across all five heats and confirming their place in the quarterfinals.
Racing continues tomorrow as the remaining three Rowing Ireland crews take to the water in the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls, women’s double sculls and women’s single sculls, as well as the repechages for the men’s pair.
