World Rowing Championships Day 1

Nine of the eleven Irish Crews raced on the first day of the World Rowing Championships 2019. Five of the Irish Crews qualified directly to the Quater Finals, with the LM2x (McCarthy, O’Donovan), M2x (Doyle, Byrne) and W1x (Puspure) all winning their heats.

The W2- crew of Monika Dukarska (Killorglin) and Aileen Crowley (OCBC) finished second in their heat today and was just beat out by the USA team for the first position. The crew will now compete in the Quarter Finals.

The M2- crew of Mark O’Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll (Skibbereen Rowing Club) finished sixth in their heat today and will now compete in the repechages to qualify for the Quarter Final.

The lightweight double of Paul O’Donovan (UCC) and Fintan McCarthy (Skibbereen Rowing Club) finished a strong first place in their heat and will now compete in the Quarter Finals.

The lightweight double crew (LW2x) of Denise Walsh (Skibbereen Rowing Club) and Aoife Casey (UCC) finished fourth in their heat this morning. They will also now go on to compete in their Quarter Finals.

The newly formed Women’s four of Aifric Keogh (UCC), Eimear Lambe (UCD), Tara Hanlon (UCC) and Emily Hegarty (UCC) finished third in their heat and was just beaten out of the 2nd position by the USA crew. They will now compete in the Repechage on Tuesday Morning.

Gary O’Donovan (Skibbereen Rowing Club) competed in the LM1x category and finished fourth. He will now be competing in the repechage in his division.

Lydia Heaphy (Skibbereen Rowing Club) competed in the LW1x heat and finished in a strong third position. She will continue to compete in the repechage in her division.

The M2x crew of Philp Doyle (Belfast Boat Club) and Ronan Byrne (UCC) finished in a strong first place today in their division and will now progress to compete in the quarter-finals.

Reigning World and European Champion Sanita Puspure (Old Collegians) competed in the W1x and gave a strong performance as she dominated throughout to hold her first place position. She has progressed onto the Quarter Final.

Rowing Ireland’s CEO Michelle Carpenter said”After day one it has been great to get crews out racing following their focused preparatory camp. With five boats now going into quarter-finals and two crews yet to race together with others going through to repechages, we are looking forward to an exciting week ahead. It is a testament to the hard work and support of these athletes with the amount of support for them from the grandstands and in their home clubs.”

LM1x – Will be racing for 13:37.
