Three Irish Crews raced on Monday in the second day of the World Rowing Championship in Austria. A sixth Irish boat qualified for the Quarter-Finals after Gary O’Donovan’s impressive win in the LM1x Repechage.
Hugh Sutton (UCC), Ryan Ballantine (Portora/Newcastle), Miles Taylor (Queen’s University) and Jake McCarthy (Skibbereen) finished 4th in their Heat on Monday morning. The Italian boat won the heat with Denmark and Austria finishing second and third. Hugh, Ryan, Miles and Jake will now race in the LM4x Repechage which will take place on Tuesday at 11.02 (GMT +1) and look to secure their place in the A Final.
The M2- Crew of Mark O’Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll (Skibbereen Rowing Club) finished third in their Repechage. They narrowly missed out by less than a second to the Greece Pair who took second place behind the Chilean boat. Mark and Shane will now race in the E Final on Thursday, they will be competing with crews from, Cuba, Hungary and Lithuania.
Gary O’Donovan (Skibbereen Rowing Club) finished first in his Repechage and held a comfortable lead throughout the race finishing over three seconds ahead of boats from Brazil, Sweden, Belgium and Uruguay. Gary progresses onto the Quarter-Finals which will take place on Wednesday.
