World Rowing U23 Championships

29th July 2019

On Sunday, the crew of Emily Hegarty, Tara Hanlon, Eimear Lambe and Claire Feerick represented Ireland in the W4- A Final. The Women’s Four took the Silver Medal and finished behind the Team GB boat that took the Gold, with just over a second between the two boats. The Irish Women’s Four had an outstanding race and worked hard to take home the Silver Medal.

Cliodhna Nolan & Aoife Casey finished in 4th place in the LW2x A Final also on Sunday after finishing 1st in the repechage on Saturday. After fighting hard from the start and pushing their way from 6th position, the Woman’s Double just beat the Denmark team by just over a second.

On Saturday, the LM4x crew of Miles Taylor, Ryan Ballantine, Hugh Sutton and Eoin Gaffney took home the Bronze medal in the LM4x A Final. They nearly took first in a fiercely competitive race but the Italian crew took Gold and France just finished ahead of the Irish Crew to take the Silver Medal.

The M4+ crew of Ross Corrigan, James Quinlan, Daire Lynch, Brian O’Rourke and Eoin Finnegan took 1st in the M4+ B final. The crew raced well and fought hard with high-level competition and managed to stay ahead of the German boat to win the race.

Rowing Ireland’s High- Performance Director, Antonio Maurogiovanni said “An extremely promising end to the World Championships U23 held in Sarasota (USA). Considering we are currently in the Olympic qualification year our goal was to have a strong competitive U23 team as a back up for possible inclusion of some of the U23 athletes in the open World Championships team.

We have had to evaluate the best way to invest our limited resources and this competition in the U23 has given me a clear indication as what is required to finalise the pre-Olympic qualification and world camp list of athletes.

All the four crews have shown a great attitude on and off the water. LW2x, W4- and LM4x made the A final and the M4+ missed by for 0.5 sec. The winning of the Silver medal w4- and the bronze of the LM4x were the highlight of this campaign without withstanding the amazing efforts by the other two crews.

These results made all of us proud considering that the level of the competition was as expected extremely high. All the four crews were competitive showing courage, abilities and skills. However, a lot of work still needs to be done. What has been built needs to be reinforced and the help and support of everyone involved in Irish Rowing is crucial.

My thanks to all of the club’s and universities coaches, sports directors, parents and Rowing Ireland coaches for the huge contribution that has led to this outstanding result.”
