The 2024 Irish Coastal Rowing Championship kicked off today at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. This year’s event was hosted by Kilmacsimon Rowing Club.

Racing began with the U16 Women’s Four 800m heats, which were won by the Ballycotton crew and closely followed by Kilmacsimon RC. Kilmacsimon then went on to take home the Senior Four Mixed championship, while the Ballycotton/Blackrock crew claimed the Inter Four Mixed title.

Conditions picked up after lunchtime as crews battled a strong crosswind in the afternoon’s racing. The Coastal Four Mixed Veteran category had a close finish, with the Passage West crew taking first place. However, the Whitegate crew made a push from third place after the turn to overtake Ballycotton in the final few meters of the race, stealing second place. Next up were the Open Classic Men’s and Women’s events, won by Wicklow and Rushbrooke A, respectively.

Courtmacsherry Rowing Club took home gold in the Timber Yawl Men’s race. In an exciting Women’s Timber Yawl event, Roscarbery lost some ground at the turn, allowing Kilmacsimon to take advantage and use their long, strong rhythm to lead in the second half of the race and clinch gold. In the Open Sprint events, the Rushbrooke crews from Cobh stormed home to first place in both the Men’s and Women’s categories. Evening racing concluded with the Traditional Under-14 800m event, in which Wicklow took the win over Edermine.

Day two of racing kicks off tomorrow at 9:00am with the U18 Coastal Four Women
