On Day 2 of the Coupe de la Jeunesse 2024 in Račice, Czechia, the Irish teams faced an unexpected challenge with high temperatures reaching 32°C, a factor that proved challenging for the athletes not accustomed to such heat. Despite the conditions, the standard of competition remained exceptionally high, with all crews performing admirably in this high-calibre event.
One of the standout moments of the regatta came in the Junior Men’s Quad (JM4x) category, where two new world records were set on Day 1. The first record was established in the heats, only to be broken later in the final, setting the stage for the intense level of competition and showcasing the exceptional talent present at this event.
Junior Women’s Four (JW4-)
On the final day, the Irish Junior Women’s Four (JW4-) crew, composed of Aida Hehir and Cloda Phillips from St. Michaels RC, Jessica Crowley from Skibbereen RC, and Lorna McNamara from Castleconnell BC, claimed a Bronze medal in the A Final. After a strong 2nd place finish in their heat, the crew demonstrated their resilience and teamwork, securing a podium spot in a very competitive field.
Junior Women’s Quad (JW4x-)
The Junior Women’s Quad, featuring Sophia Young (Methodist College), Sibéal Ní Fhlaithbheartaigh (Castleconnell BC), Sarah Walsh (Sligo RC), and Louise Forrester (Shandon BC), delivered a noteworthy performance. After finishing 3rd in their heat, they advanced to the A final, where they finished 5th overall. Their efforts throughout the weekend highlighted their potential on the international stage.
Junior Women’s Single Scull (JW 1x)
Aoife Hendy of Skibbereen RC continued to impress in the Junior Women’s Single Scull. She secured 2nd place in her heat, earning a spot in the A Final. Unfortunately, she was seriously affected by the high temperatures during the final, which hampered her performance, leading to a 6th place finish. Despite this setback, her consistent performances throughout the regatta underscored her growing prowess in the sport.
Junior Men’s Single Scull (JM 1x)
Richard Heaslip of Athlone Boat Club displayed determination in the Junior Men’s Single Scull, finishing 6th in his heat and progressing to the B final. He improved his standing in the B final, finishing 4th and showcasing his progress and resilience during the competition.
Junior Men’s Quad (JM4x)
The Junior Men’s Quad, including Daniel Fleming (Muckross RC), Adam Kenny (Athlone BC), Eoin Balfe (St. Michaels RC), and Ian Coffey (Muckross RC), faced a tough field. After finishing 5th in their heat, they competed in the B Final, finishing 6th. Despite the fierce competition, the experience gained will be crucial for their future endeavors.
