This weekend, Lough Rinn will transform into a hub of competitive rowing as it hosts the highly anticipated 1K Classic. The 1K Classic, a key event in the rowing calendar, features a challenging 1000-meter race that tests the limits of power, speed, and strategy. Competitors will navigate the serene yet demanding waters of Lough Rinn, known for its ideal rowing conditions and picturesque surroundings.

This year’s event is made possible thanks to the generous funding from Leitrim County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund. Their support underscores the significance of the event, not just for the sport of rowing, but also for the local community and the region’s development.

Rowing Ireland’s involvement highlights the importance of fostering high-level competition and nurturing rowing talent in Ireland. Leitrim County Council’s support reflects the community’s commitment to promoting local events that bring people together and boost regional tourism. Meanwhile, the backing from the Department of Rural and Community Development emphasises the role of such events in rural regeneration, enhancing community spirit, and promoting economic growth.

The team has been organising this event since the beginning of the year. We have 100 races, all finals, with a race every five minutes, creating a hectic schedule throughout the day. Banigí go léir sult as an ocáid” said Michael Hughes, Chairperson of the 2024 1K Classic Committee.

The event kicks off at 9am on Saturday and spectators can expect a series of tightly contested races, showcasing the rowers’ endurance and skill. In addition to the races, there will be food stalls, coffee huts and of course a fully stocked merchandise shop.
