Rowing Ireland is delighted to announce that Marie Kidney of University College Cork has been selected for the Women’s Student Coaching Academy.
The WSCA is a collaborative programme delivered by Sport Ireland, Student Sport Ireland, third-level institutions and National Governing Bodies. It provides a year of mentoring, coach education, workshops and development opportunities to support female students with the ambition to progress in coaching.
Marie brings extensive experience to the programme, having been involved in rowing for more than 12 years. A former Lee Rowing Club athlete, she won two national championships, represented Ireland at junior level and competed successfully internationally. She now rows with UCC Rowing Club while coaching its novice squad and the J13–J14 girls at Lee Rowing Club.
Marie has also previously supported the Cork Dragons, a group of breast cancer survivors, and will take on the role of Women’s Captain at UCC Rowing Club for the coming season.
Speaking about her coaching ambitions, Marie said:
“I want my girls to leave the boathouse feeling better than when they arrived.”
Her commitment to increasing female participation and retention, alongside her passion, leadership and experience, makes her a fantastic addition to the Academy.
Everyone at Rowing Ireland wishes Marie the very best as she begins this exciting development opportunity. We look forward to supporting her coaching journey and seeing the positive contribution she continues to make within rowing.
