Saturday was a special day at the National Rowing Centre. We welcomed the largest number of trialists ever, with an outstanding level of performance across the board. Our senior athletes produced strong results and some remarkable racing, where our juniors are stepping up to the highest standards set by our seniors.
It was a pleasure to meet so many dedicated coaches and parents in the athletes’ canteen, which opened this week.
I am committed to building a culture where standards and behaviours remain at the highest level, and where everyone is given a fair opportunity to succeed. Saturday was a clear reminder of the power of sport to bring communities together. Rowing is truly a unique discipline, and the smiles and excitement from the day will stay with me for a long time.
Congratulations to everyone who competed. Reaching the start line is an achievement in itself. Seeing nearly 500 boats on the water is a testament to the quality of coaching and performance across the island. Rowing is in a very strong place. For those who aspire to represent Ireland in the years ahead, my commitment is that we will continue to strengthen transparency in the selection process and uphold a culture that is worthy of you all.
Thank you for the warm welcome into the sport. I look forward to meeting more clubs, coaches and athletes as I travel across the island.
