Memorial Paolo d’Aloja

The high performance athletes opened their international regatta season this weekend at the ‘Memorial Paolo d’Aloja’ in Piediluco, Italy. The weekend was made up of two independent regattas held back to back. Ireland finished with two medals on day one, gold for Fiona Murtagh and Tara Hanlon in the Women’s Pair, and bronze for Hugh Moore in the Lightweight Men’s Scull.

With new combinations in the Men’s Double and Four, the team held competitive races reaching the A Final on both days. The Lightweight Women’s Double of Margaret Cremen and Aoife Casey, raced up a category finishing just behind Sanita Puspure and Zoe Hyde in the Heavyweight Women’s Double on both days.

More silverware was picked up on Sunday with the Women’s Pair, Lightweight Men’s Scull and Men’s Double of Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch, all taking home silver medals.

“This weekend was good race experience for the team before we head into the World Rowing Events.” said Antonio Maurogiovanni, High Performance Director. “We’re happy with the results, picking up medals in the Women’s Pair, Men’s Double and Lightweight Men’s Scull as well as competitive racing across the board. Not all of our athletes travelled due other commitments. We’ve learned a lot from this weekend, and our focus is now on the European Championships at the end of May.”

The next event for the high performance team is the Senior European Championships in Bled, Slovenia from May 25th-28th. Results from this weekend can be found below.
