All Irish crews progress to their A/B Semifinals after winning each of their respective races this morning.

There’s further disruption to the race schedule of the U19 World Championships with the weather worsening as the weekend continues. All racing on Sunday has now been cancelled with all semifinals and finals being run tomorrow.

The women’s double of Kate Reidy (Lee RC) and Ayla O’Neill (Kenmare RC) cruised through their repechage, taking the lead from the start and finishing comfortably in first position to take one of the two spots up for grabs for the A/B Semi’s. With the reduced race schedule, C/D Semis were pulled which meant that the athletes finishing in third and fourth progressed straight to the C Final with the rest going to the D Final. Tomorrow morning they face France, Greece, Italy, Australia and Germany in the race for the A Final.

Zach Meegan (Athlone BC) and Shane Rafferty (St Michael’s RC) followed suit in the men’s double, winning their repechage to head into the A/B Semi. Coming into the final quarter of the race there was only three seconds separating Ireland, Poland and Sweden with only the top two crews making it into the A/B Semi. The previous race experience that Meegan and Rafferty had after competing together last year at Coupe stuck to them in this final fight, as they held their position and finished in first place.

Similar to her heat, Holly Davis (Lee Valley RC) wasn’t letting anyone hold her back in her quarterfinal. Getting the early lead again Davis continuously widened the gap between herself and the rest of the field as the race progressed, finishing with clear water ahead of the German sculler in second place. She goes up against a neutral athlete, USA, Uruguay, South Africa and Italy where she’ll have her eyes on the A Final.

The racing can be followed through the live video stream on the World Rowing website HERE.
