Racing got underway this evening in St. Catharines, Canada, after adverse weather conditions canceled Monday’s schedule and further delayed today’s races.
Defending her title, Siobhan McCrohan dominated the third heat of the lightweight women’s single scull. The Tribesmen sculler sat comfortably in the pack until the 1000m mark, where she made a push to create a 6-second gap between her and Kenia Lechuga Alanis from Mexico. Siobhan will race in the A/B semi-final on Friday.
The U23 lightweight women’s double of Aine O’Mahony and Sophia Monahan comfortably made it through to the A/B semi-finals after a strong performance in the repechage. With two crews advancing to the A/B semi-final, it was Ireland and Germany that broke away from the field by the halfway mark and went on to secure their spots in the semi-finals.
UCC’s Andrew Sheehan also secured his spot in the A/B semi-final after finishing second in the U23 men’s single scull repechage.
The U23 women’s double scull of Holly Davis and Grace Healy missed out on A final progression by the smallest of margins—0.41 seconds. In a competitive repechage, the pair were narrowly beaten to the line by Germany and Australia, with all three crews finishing within 1.7 seconds of each other. Going bowball to bowball, the pair kept up a tough fight to the line. Grace and Holly will race in the B final on Friday.
The U23 men’s four of Liam Walter, Luke Dunleavy, Andrew O’Leary, and Rory Buckley are also into the C final after placing 5th in the repechage. Off the start, the crew found themselves in 5th position and fought to make a move through the pack.
