Day 3 of the Irish Rowing Championships was met with great excitement as we were greeted with the first bit of sunshine all weekend. With the first race taking place at 6:45am, it was another early start for the rowers here in Cork but as the sun rose over the picturesque venue, rowers and spectators alike could feel the excitement in the air.
As the races progressed, rivalries that had been brewing throughout the season were reignited on the water. Clubs with a history of fierce competition faced off, adding an extra layer of excitement to the already intense races.
The men’s and women’s J18 8 events brought huge excitement around the grounds of the NRC, especially up at the big screen where huge crowds were cheering for their crews. Enniskillen BC narrowly taking the win in the men’s by .8 of a second over St Josephs. Meanwhile, in the women’s event, St Michaels fought hard till the end and got their victory over Enniskillen BC.
It was Ryan Spelman from Shandon who took the win today in the men’s senior 1x but Mannix from UL came in a close second to make it a really exciting finish. Shandon also had a great win in the Men’s junior 18 4+ with another tight finish against Presentation College Cork.
The Sunday of the championships always ends on a high with the women and men’s senior 8 events. In the women’s event, the unstoppable composite crew of UL and Castleconnell were victorious over the very impressive UGBC. In the men’s event, it was a three boat finale with UCDBC taking the title, Cork in second and UGBC in third.
Day 3 of the Irish Rowing Championships concluded on a high note, with memories of exceptional performances and the spirit of sportsmanship lingering in the hearts of all who attended.
The event showcased the immense talent and passion within the Irish rowing community as we battled through the adverse weather conditions that we were presented with this weekend. It just shows the dedication that we, as a community, have for our sport.
A huge thank you to everyone who was involved and attended who made this championships one for the books!
