It is with the greatest regret that we announce the cancellation of the 2026 1K Classic due to adverse weather conditions forecast for the weekend, in particular the significant and sustained wind gusts predicted for Lough Rinn. Current forecasts indicate gusts of up to 60 km/h on Saturday and sustained winds of 40–45 km/h on Sunday, creating unsafe and unmanageable racing conditions.
Following careful consideration of the latest forecasts from Met Éireann and other reliable sources, the organising committee has determined that the anticipated wind speeds and gusting conditions present a risk to safe racing. In particular, the potential for strong and unpredictable gusts creates an environment where fair and safe competition cannot be guaranteed for all crews, and where safety and rescue operations could be severely challenged.
This decision has not been taken lightly. We are very aware of the considerable effort and preparation made by clubs, athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers, as well as the travel and accommodation arrangements that have been put in place. However, the safety and wellbeing of all athletes and participants must remain our primary concern, and under the forecast conditions, we cannot ensure an acceptable level of safety on the water.
We would like to sincerely thank all volunteers, clubs, athletes, coaches, and the wider rowing community for their continued support, cooperation, and commitment to the event. We also extend our sincere thanks to Leitrim County Council, local accommodation providers, and all suppliers whose assistance and support are greatly appreciated.
We recognise the disappointment this decision will cause and will now examine the rowing calendar in the coming period to determine whether it may be possible to reschedule the event at a later date.
