Indoor rowing is one of the fastest-growing forms of fitness right now – and there’s no secret why. It’s a highly accessible, low-impact, full-body workout that engages 80–85% of the body’s muscles, improves cardiovascular health, builds strength, and suits people of all ages and fitness levels. Whether you’re new to exercise or returning to training, the rowing machine offers an efficient, safe, and incredibly effective way to get moving.
With this growth in mind, Rowing Ireland is proud to announce the launch of its new pilot programme, ‘Rise & Row’, currently underway in Galway.
‘Rise & Row’ is a six-week indoor rowing programme designed for anyone looking to begin their indoor rowing journey or maintain their fitness in a structured, supportive environment. With two coached sessions per week, the programme focuses on developing technique, improving fitness, and building confidence on the erg – all while creating a fun, social space to meet new people and stay motivated.
The goal is simple: get moving, build confidence, improve fitness, and enjoy the process of learning to row indoors.
The feedback from the program so far has been incredibly encouraging. Participants have said how easy the sessions feel to follow, with the technique broken down in a way that’s simple and approachable. Several have mentioned how supportive and positive the atmosphere is, and how quickly they felt comfortable on the erg.
People are also enjoying the mix of learning and fitness. One participant said the sessions offer “a nice mix of strength and cardiovascular work,” while another loved “finding a rhythm during the pieces” – helped along by the music and group energy.
A real standout has been the sense of fun and community. As one participant put it, it’s been a great chance to “try something new, learn a new skill, meet new people, and enjoy the process.” This early feedback shows that Rise & Row is delivering exactly what it set out to do: get people moving, confident, and excited about indoor rowing.
This pilot is only the beginning of what’s to come for indoor rowing in Ireland. As interest grows and more people discover how accessible, enjoyable, and effective indoor rowing can be, Rise & Row aims to expand into clubs, gyms, and communities nationwide.
If your club or facility is interested in hosting this programme or getting involved in the development of indoor rowing locally, please get in touch at indoorrowing@rowingireland.ie. We’d love to work with you in bringing ‘Rise & Row’ and many other projects to more people across the country.
