The U19 European Rowing Championships begin tomorrow, May 24th, in Kruszwica, Poland. Rowing Ireland will have five crews competing over the weekend in what promises to be an exciting two-day event. Racing includes heats, semifinals, and A, B, and C finals. The regatta will be live-streamed, and the link is provided below.

JW2-

The JW2- consists of Aida Hehir and Cloda Phillips (St Michael’s Rowing Club), the pair raced together in the women’s quad at the 2024 Coupe de la Jeunesse. Romania is expected to be the crew to beat in this event, which features 10 entries. Crews will progress from the heats into either the A or B final, which will take place on Sunday.

JM2x

The JM2x crew of Jack Rafferty (St Michael’s Rowing Club) and Jonah Kirby (Kenmare Rowing Club) will represent Ireland at the U19 European Rowing Championships. Jack competed in the JM4x at last year’s U19 World Championships, while Jonah will be making his debut for Ireland. With 14 crews entered, the competition will be fierce, including former U19 World Champions. The Irish crew will race in a heat tomorrow morning, with progression to the semifinals scheduled for the afternoon.

JW2x

The JW2x is made up of Sophia Young (Methodist College Belfast Rowing Club) and Aoife Hendy (Skibbereen Rowing Club) this will be their first appearance at this level. Sophia previously raced in the women’s quad at the 2024 Coupe de la Jeunesse, while Aoife competed in the women’s single. With 14 entries in the event, several familiar faces from last year’s championships will be returning. Racing begins with heats, followed by progression to the semifinals and then the A, B, and C finals on Sunday.

JM4-

The JM4- crew of Daniel Crozier (Methodist College Belfast Rowing Club), Tommy Little (Neptune Rowing Club), Richard Heaslip (Athlone Boat Club), and Paul Schofield (Coláiste Iognáid Rowing Club) will represent Ireland at the U19 European Rowing Championships. Daniel, Tommy, and Paul are making their Irish debuts, while Richard adds further strength to the lineup. With nine crews entered, Romania and Italy are expected to be the ones to watch. The Irish crew will race in their heat tomorrow, with progression to the A and B finals on Sunday.

JM4x

The JM4x is made up of Harry McCartney (Methodist College Belfast Rowing Club), Evan O’Byrne (St Michael’s Rowing Club), Mattias Cogan (Skibbereen Rowing Club), and Bill Murphy (Cappoquin Rowing Club). Harry and Bill are making their Irish debuts, while Mattias and Evan previously competed in the M4x+ at the 2024 U19 World Championships. With 16 crews entered, it’s a highly competitive category. Heats will take place tomorrow, with progression to the semifinals in the afternoon and A, B, and C finals on Sunday.
