At Rowing Ireland, we believe that a strong future for our sport depends on inclusive, representative leadership at every level. As we celebrate Women in Sport Week, we reaffirm our commitment to creating meaningful pathways for women — not only on the water, but in coaching, officiating, governance, and decision-making roles throughout Irish rowing.

We recognise that visibility matters. When women are seen leading clubs, programmes, and performance pathways, it sends a powerful message to the next generation: leadership in rowing is for everyone. Building that future requires more than intention — it requires investment, education, and opportunity.

That is why Rowing Ireland continues to deliver our Women in Leadership Programme, designed to support and empower women who are currently in, or aspiring to step into, leadership roles within the rowing community. The programme provides practical tools, peer support, and development opportunities that build confidence, strengthen networks, and equip participants to lead with impact.

Alongside this, our Young Women in Leadership Programme focuses on developing emerging leaders, ensuring that young women within our clubs and pathways can see a clear route into governance and decision-making. By nurturing leadership skills early and providing structured support, we are creating a sustainable pipeline of capable, confident women ready to shape the future of the sport.

Importantly, our commitment to leadership development begins at school level. Through our TY Coaching Programme, delivered in partnership with Get Going Get Rowing, we provide Transition Year students — including many young women — with the opportunity to develop coaching skills, gain practical experience, and build confidence in leading sessions within their schools and clubs. This initiative not only strengthens participation but plants the seed of leadership from an early age, helping young women to see themselves as capable role models within the sport.

Our commitment is simple but steadfast: to ensure that women have equal opportunity, equal voice, and equal influence across Irish rowing. Through targeted initiatives, strong role models, and a culture that values diversity, Rowing Ireland is working to build a leadership landscape that truly reflects our community — today and for generations to come.

This week, we are delighted to share a conversation with Nuala Lupton of Skibbereen Rowing Club. Enjoy and share with anyone in your club who may be interested in reading about Nuala’s impact.
