Clubs are now generating revenue from this programme that brings a whole host of other benefits too!
The Women on the Water (WoW) programme is a joint initiative by Rowing Ireland’s Women in Sport and Get Going Get Rowing. The programme aims to introduce adult women to rowing at a recreational level. We have had a gap in our sport for a long time in how to effectively create a pathway for adult women to join the sport for the first time and enjoy its many benefits, without committing to serious senior rowing. This programme has allowed clubs to engage with a new cohort in their community, diversifying their revenue streams and community engagement which brings so many positives such as:
- Stronger club – Diversifying membership base is proven to improve volunteer enjoyment, quality and retention. Living by set out club values increases members’ trust and enjoyment of the club as they know there is a true interest in catering for all types of rowers. This improves overall club culture.
- Revenue stream – This year, 9 clubs made an average of €1,466 each, with one club making more than double this amount as it had more women on the programme. Clubs could also make more money by offering two time slots or days.
- Coach Development and income– Coaches can earn money by being a part of the programme and develop their skillset by coaching a different type of learner.
What does the programme involve?
River and Coastal clubs provide an 6 or 8-week programme to female adult beginners. The club decides how many participants they can cater for and can divide this how they like e.g. Tuesday 6-7pm, 6 slots and Thursday 6-7pm, 10 slots. The Women in Sport Officer will provide guidance on our safety pre requisites in terms of ratios of participants to coaches and what safety documentation is needed. If a club ran the programme last year and has women interested in participating again, they can offer an ‘intermediate’ follow-on version. In this, women who have grasped the basics can do rowing sessions with similarly skilled participants, gaining more experience and enjoying time on the water. The beginner programme includes use of the rowing machine, progressing to on the water, introducing drills and exercises that will get the participants comfortable with the rowing stroke.
Rowing Ireland advertises the programme, provides participants with information, t-shirts and coordinates sign ups for the club. The club arranges coaches and boats.
