Lough Rinn, Co. Leitrim is set to host the standout fixture of the university rowing calendar this Saturday, 18 April, as the 2026 University Championships brings together the best of third-level rowing from across the island of Ireland.
Due to the forecasted high winds, the difficult decision has been made to reduce the races on the day to the 8s only, meaning the Bank of Ireland and Wylie Cup are still up for grabs. The Senior, Inter, Club & Novice 8s will all get the chance to showcase their talents. Racing will take place from 09:00 to 11:30.
This year’s Championships will also see the introduction of a significant development in university racing, with Mixed 8s events for both Senior and Novice crews being trialled for the first time. The inclusion marks an important step in broadening participation and testing new formats within the university rowing scene.
As always at Lough Rinn, the regatta will benefit from a well-organised and spectator-friendly setup. Overflow parking will be available on site, ensuring smooth access for crews, supporters, and volunteers throughout the day.
As universities make final preparations ahead of Saturday, attention now turns to conditions on Lough Rinn and how crews will adapt to a fast-moving race programme where consistency will be key.
The 2026 University Championships once again highlights the continued growth and competitiveness of third-level rowing in Ireland, with Lough Rinn providing the backdrop for what promises to be a morning of high-calibre racing and university pride.
