The sun continues to shine on Lago di Varese after the few miserable days in the lead up to racing. Day two finishes up in Italy, and we’ll see four crews from Ireland race for medals tomorrow in the A Finals.

The Men’s Double of Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch dominated their repechage, leading the race from the start line to the finish. The Belfast and Clonmel rowers will go into tomorrow’s A final with the quickest time out of the two repechages that raced today. Going head to head again with the reigning World Champions, Stefan Broenink and Melvin Twellaar of the Netherlands, it’s a race not to be missed!

Sanita Puspure (Old Collegians BC) is back racing for medals in the Women’s Single after qualifying today for the A Final. The top three crews from the A/B Semi would move through to the race for medals, and Puspure did what she had to do, finishing in second place behind the Norwegian sculler. With a conservative start, Sanita began closer to the back of the pack and as the race progressed, she made her way up through the field. Crews to watch in tomorrow’s final are the undefeated two time World Champion Karolien Florijn of the Netherlands, and 2022 U23 World Champion Alexandra Foester of Germany.

The Men’s Four of John Kearney, Andrew Sheehan, Jack Dorney and Ronan Byrne finished fourth in their repechage sending them through to tomorrow’s B Final. Going out with a stronger start than yesterday’s heat, Ireland passed the first marker in second position and the halfway mark in third. This move definitely played to their advantage, putting them in a better position coming into the final stretch.

Nathan Timoney (Enniskillen Royal BC) and Ross Corrigan (Portora BC) miss out on the Men’s Pair A Final by just over three seconds. Finishing third behind Denmark and Italy in their repechage wasn’t enough to see them through to the race for medals, as just two crews were to progress. Ireland stuck with the top group in the race not drifting more than the three second gap from the leading pairs. They’re up in the first race of the day tomorrow against Sweden, Italy and two German crews.

Brian Colsh wrapped up his World Cup this morning in the C Final of the Men’s Single. The Men’s single scull is one of the most competitive events and attracted the largest number of entries at this regatta with 30 scullers on the start list. Through the second quarter of his race, Colsh squeezed ahead of the scullers from Monaco and Egypt and moved into second position. Winding it up into the finish, Brian was able to hold off Abdelkhalek Elbanna of Egypt in his late sprint for the line. Colsh leaves Italy 14th out of the 30 athletes.

Queen’s University Belfast BC rower, Konan Pazzaia, finished fourth in the A/B Semi of the Men’s Single which sends him through to the B Final. Pazzaia went out hard to put himself in the three qualifying positions and managed to hold this right through to the third 500. George Bourne of Great Britain made his move at this point and just got ahead of the sculler from Ireland. Pazzaia didn’t let him go easy, staying on his stern finishing just two and a half seconds behind. He’s up against Portugal, Ukraine, Brazil, Spain and Switzerland tomorrow morning in the B Final.

The 2024 International season has officially begun with day one of the first World Cup coming to a close here in Italy. This is the first opportunity for the crews from Ireland to test the waters after they last competed seven months ago at the 2023 World Championships, and they’re off to a strong start.

The Women’s Four of Emily Hegarty, Natalie Long, Eimear Lambe and Imogen Magner stole the show today clinching first place in their heat, just ahead of reigning World Champions the Netherlands. Sitting in third place right up until the last 500, Ireland left it to their final sprint to not only move into the top two direct qualifying spots, but into the leading position. Sunday’s final is definitely one to tune into.

Sanita Puspure is back with a bang. Racing in her single for the first time since her challenging races in Tokyo, Puspure has started as she means to go on. Crossing the line first in her heat, Puspure goes into the A/B Semifinals tomorrow with the second fastest time. She goes head to head with Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Ukraine and Sweden hoping to make it into the top three spots which will go on to the A Final.

Galway natives, Fiona Murtagh and Aifric Keogh were first to hit the water this morning in the Women’s Pair. After Italy and Croatia scratched their entries yesterday, their race was reduced to a straight final with todays heat turning into a preliminary race for lanes. Ireland finished just one second behind the crew from the Netherlands, the 2023 World Championship gold medallists. As a prelim race, there’s lots of different strategies from the individual teams so Sunday’s final is due to be an interesting one.

Both of Irelands Men’s Scullers, Konan Pazzaia and Brian Colsh, successfully progressed form their heats and qualified for this afternoons Quarterfinals. Pazzaia had a gutsy race, going out strong and sitting on the bow of 2023 World silver medallist, Simon Van Dorp. He held his position through the race finishing in second place. Galway’s Brian Colsh finished third in his heat securing his spot in the Quarterfinals.

Pazzaia bumped it up again in the Men’s Single Quarterfinals, beating Quentin Antognelli from Monaco on the line to finish in third, the last qualifying spot to the A/B Semi. Tomorrow he’ll face last years World Champion, Ollie Zeidler from Germany. Colsh is into the C Final after a fifth place finish in his Quarterfinal. He’ll be first up for Ireland in the morning.

Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch are into tomorrow mornings repechage in the Men’s Double. With only one crew from the heat to qualify directly into the A Final, Ireland just missed out but looked comfortable crossing the line. Tomorrow they face Finland, Croatia, Australia and Great Britain with the fastest two doubles making it to the race for medals on Sunday.

The Fermanagh pair of Nathan Timoney and Ross Corrigan finished fourth in the heat of the Men’s Pair and are into tomorrow’s repechage. Coming fifth through the first marker, Timoney and Corrigan pushed their way into fourth place over the next 500 meters. The top two crews tomorrow will make it through to the A Final.

The Men’s Four of John Kearney, Andrew Sheehan, Jack Dorney and Ronan Byrne finished fifth in their heat and will race again tomorrow in the repechage. It’s just two boats from a competitive field that will make it through to Sundays A Final.

As a consequence of hosting the Schools Regatta this year, Limerick Regatta has had an unprecedentedly large entry. Initial timetabling resulted in racing commencing at 9:00 and finishing at 1:00 the following morning. As a result, the Committee have had to consider how to reduce the regatta to a manageable length. To do so we have taken a number of actions:

  • All masters events have been cancelled with the exception of the eights
  • All single sculls have been cancelled
  • All Senior doubles and pairs have been cancelled

This achieves the necessary reduction in the number of races while impacting the smallest number of athletes.

The committee fully appreciate the disappointment that such actions will cause, particularly considering the cancellation of racing last weekend and this weekend. We do however believe that we have no option as we have an obligation to provide a timetable of events that can be run-off in a reasonable period.

There are no changes to the Schools Regatta. We will publish a timetable for both regattas in the next 24 hours.

For any clubs that have already paid for cancelled events, we will arrange a full refund of any amounts due. Please bear with us as it will probably be after the regatta before we can do this.

This weekends racing for Skibbereen Regatta and the University Championships in the National Rowing Centre will not go ahead.

Unfortunately due to the unpredictable weather conditions, particularly the wind forecast for the weekend we have had to make the very difficult decision of postponing the event in the interest of safety and providing good racing conditions.

The timetable of racing gave us no room to manoeuvre. We appreciate there are a lot of travelling clubs and cannot delay the decision any longer as the wind forecast remains challenging for what would have been an exciting busy 2 full days of racing.

We are now planning to work with new dates in 2 weeks time- the 27th and 28th April 2024. We will organise for entries to reopen and closing date will be next Wednesday as per tracker. We hope to see you all in a few weeks time. If you have any further questions please send them through to skibbregattasecretary@gmail.com or to 0861250767.
