The organising committee for the Rowing Ireland 1K classic event to be held next Saturday the 1st of July at the NRC Cork urgently requires Umpires for this important event.

With a huge entry, the Umpires play a vital role in ensuring the fair and safe running of our events. If you are new to umpiring, or have years of experience there is a role for you at these events. We appreciate it is a huge commitment for all of you, but also know that these events simply do not happen without your continued and loyal support to clubs and Rowing Ireland.

If you have any spare time to assist on Saturday please contact Andrew at umpires@rowingireland.ie

The countdown is now on for 2023 1k Classic, with the entries officially closed last night at 7pm. The event has been expanding in the last number of years and this reflects the very positive and healthy participation in this sector of Irish Rowing. In this years 1k classic there has been 5 new, competitive events added to the racing schedule including the Mixed Masters 8+.

Last years event entailed a very full day of racing, and now with the previously mentioned 5 extra events that are to be incorporated into this years racing, the spectacle will be full, fast and furious throughout come July 1st.

This event caters for the Junior crews from the under 15 years categories all the way down to under 13, girls and boys. The other half of this innovative competition caters for the masters rowers, men and women from age 28 upwards. There has been great growth in this category of rowing in recent years and this is very evident in this year’s 1K entry.  Rowing Ireland is very satisfied with this area of progress as it has opened up the sport to a whole new audience.

The 1k Classic is an important event for Irish Rowing because it puts the spotlight on different categories of Rowers and gives them a chance to compete at the National Rowing Center.

Remember if you have crews racing for the first time remind them to have the following practiced:

  • Backing up onto the start (there are big singles entries and scullers and all crews will need to get onto start efficiently
  • Repaint your oars in club colours
  • Have your club gear and colours ready
  • Straightening up boats at the start (when practicing starts with your crews make sure they know how to align the boat and have it straight at the start)
  • Have plenty of change of wet gear and sun screen (we are in Ireland so we need to prepare for all weather)
  • Water and refuel

Athlone Regatta

The annual Athlone Regatta took place this weekend in Coosan Point, Athlone. It was an early start for the athletes and volunteers, with the first race being set off at 8am which was the mens j16 4x+. The regatta ran over 130 straight final races throughout the day, finishing with the mixed masters 4x+ at 6pm. The Regatta ran seamlessly thanks to the volunteers at Athlone Boat Club who donated their weekend to run a successful regatta.

Henley Women’s Regatta

Over the weekend many Irish crews travelled to Henley, England to race in the Henley Women’s Regatta. First up over the weekend was the time trial on Friday, followed by the semi finals on Saturday and the finals Sunday. There was a strong showing from the Irish crews with Shandon Boat Club, Shannon Rowing Club, UCD Boat Club, Queens University Boat Club and University of Galway boat club all making the trip across the pond for the event. The Irish boats saw success in the time trials with many of the crews qualifying for Saturday’s races.

Up next is Cork Regatta taking place this Saturday and Sunday.

The Irish indoor rowing championships was back in full swing at University of Limerick Sports Arena on Saturday 4th February. Participants from all corners of the country gathered at this prestigious indoor event that returned to full capacity in person at the packed arena on Saturday.

It was a close call in the Women’s U23 event with less than .8 of a second between Caoimhe O’Sullivan of ULRC and Anna Keating of Shannon Rowing Club.

The event was hosted by Joe Cantillon, and catered for ages 12 to 80. There was a selection of races from relay races to 500m to 2000m available for all abilities. A full list of results can be found here:
